Richard Lints | Renewing the Evangelical Mission
Dr. Richard Lints is the Andrew Mutch Distinguished Professor of Theology at Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary, where he has taught since 1986. He is the editor of Renewing the Evangelical Mission (Eerdmans, 2013), a collection of essays by evangelical thinkers with significant institutional memory of the evangelical movement who nonetheless see new opportunities for the evangelical voice in the years ahead.
I think that it’s become clear that… evangelicalism is a mission, as opposed to a permanent set of doctrinal claims… The movement—I would like to call it a mission—is more nearly an action-descriptor for the evangelicals than a particular confessional claim. However, that’s not to say, as many in the volume do remind us, that there are [not] core confessional claims at the heart of the evangelical movement, and part of our energy [as authors of the book] has been talking with each other about those core commitments.”
